Questions & Answers

When is a neuropsychological examination needed?

A neuropsychological evaluation is recommended when impairment in cognitive functioning is suspected or there are changes in behavioral or emotional functioning. A referral is typically made to rule out the following conditions and to describe their impact on a person’s functioning:

  • Suspected memory problems or dementia
  • Traumatic brain injury and concussion
  • Neurological conditions including stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor, multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, etc.
  • Medical conditions such as lupus, liver disease, or HIV infection
  • Various psychiatric conditions

Results of the evaluation may help:

  • Assist with differential diagnosis
  • Guide treatment planning and rehabilitation
  • Contribute to decisions about prognosis and the ability to function independently
  • Inform educational and vocational planning (e.g., ability to return to work or school)
  • Track changes in functioning over time

What should I expect?

The neuropsychological evaluation consists of a clinical interview and testing. During the interview, we will ask about current symptoms, medical history, medications, education, and other important factors.

The testing portion of the evaluation is done while seated at a table. The testing involves answering questions and taking paper and pencil tests. A few of the tests are computerized.

What will be assessed?

The particular tests that will be administered depend upon the questions raised by the patient and the referring physician. The tests may assess the following areas:

  • intellectual abilities
  • academic skills
  • attention and concentration
  • learning and memory
  • reasoning and problem-solving
  • visual-spatial skills
  • language
  • motor skills
  • mood and personality

Depending on the patient’s needs, some abilities may be assessed in more detail than others. Specialized training in neuropsychology enables our clinicians to use the procedures that yield the most comprehensive understanding of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

How long is the neuropsychological evaluation?

The time involved in the evaluation will depend upon the concerns/questions that are raised (by the patient or the referring physician) and the age of the individual being assessed. However, the evaluation can often last anywhere from several hours to a full day. If needed, the evaluation can be completed over several sessions to adjust for patient endurance.

What will happen after the evaluation?

After the evaluation your doctor will write a comprehensive report. This report is usually completed within 1-2 weeks after the testing appointment, if not sooner. This report will provide a diagnosis (if appropriate) and pertinent recommendations and referrals.

Your doctor will schedule an appointment to go over the test results with the patient. During this appointment your doctor will review the information contained within the report and will provide the patient with a copy of the report.

With patient permission, your doctor may send the results to the referring doctor, or other healthcare provider.

How do I schedule an appointment?

We evaluate individuals 18 years of age and older. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment or have questions about your insurance coverage please call (971) 384-0084.

What is your cancellation / no show policy?

Due to the time involved in completing an evaluation, only 1 or 2 exams are scheduled each day. Your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. Please arrive on time or call (971) 384-0084 if you anticipate being more than 15 minutes late. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, we will try to accommodate you, but may need to have you reschedule.

If you do not show for your appointment or fail to cancel your appointment with sufficient notice, we may be unable to reschedule you. Missed appointments due to unforeseen emergency situations may be considered an exception to our policy and will be at the discretion of the practice manager on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.
